King of Thebes who unknowingly killed his father and married his mother Epicaste; he continued to rule Thebes in suffering after the truth was revealed.

The Theban king whose mother Epicaste Odysseus sees among the shades. In this early version she hangs herself when the gods make the truth known, but Oedipus goes on ruling in Thebes, hounded by her Furies.
