God of fire and the forge, son of Hera. Hymn 20 hymns him as the teacher, with Athena, of civilizing crafts to humankind; Hymn 3 has Hera recall throwing him into the sea for his lameness, and Hymn 4 uses his name in a poetic figure for fire itself.
